FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)
FGM is the practice or the tradition in some cultures of partially or totally removing the external genitals of girls or young women, for non-medical reasons. These parts include the clitoral parts like the labia minora and labia majora.
FGM is highly practiced in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, for cultural, religious and sometimes for hygienic reasons (as claimed). notably, 80% of Malaysian women practice FGM for religious reasons.
However, when we take a closer look at FGM, the dangers outweigh the benefits of this practice. For lack of a better word to describe it, permit me to call it an "evil practice".
From the Biblical book of creation (genesis), God created man in his own image, with all his body parts and features for a necessity. Remember God did not consult man on how to created him. This mean that man was not meant to have a say on how he would be created.
Imagine someone plucks off one of your body parts, say an eye, a leg, a finger or even the hand. How would you feel?! Or how would the society react to that? That feeling is exactly the same as the feeling of the victims of FGM.
However, because of the stereotype surrounding the act, because of the blindfold of the cultural or religious beliefs, they (victims) suffer the effects in the deep, dark and "evil" infiltrated corners of the society, unable to speak out for fear of being scolded or even cursed from the societies.
To change this narrative of beliefs driving us to commit irreversible atrocities against humanity, we need to look close enough to the effects of FGM on women. some of these can not be revered even if we wanted to and we must stop it as soon as immediately.
For example, FGM affects the female sexual health by removing or damaging highly sensitive genital tissues especially clitoris, affects sexual sensitivity and leads to sexual problems such as decreased sexual desire and pleasure, pain during sex, difficulty in penetration, decreased lubrication during intercourse and reduced frequency. These among others are some of the pains and difficulties to which we subject our children, sisters, wives and mothers.
There is no other time than now that we should be waiting for to act against, and end this "evil" practice, its traumatizing, agonizing and generally psychologically tormenting.
